Quick Net Neutrality Analogy

In Illinois, there is a coal mine just inside Perry County. The mine loads and dispatches trucks to take the coal to a Mississippi river dock in Randolph county. Hundreds of trips per day are made between the coal mine and the river dock.flat,800x800,070,f.u2[1]Over the years, the roads have been worn tremendously with ruts and bumps so bad, you can barely walk across the street in Steeleville sober… …forget about it when you’ve had a few.

In this analogy, Net Neutrality says that you can’t charge the trucker any more than the Prius for the road usage. The Prius pays as much for the road as the trucker. The Prius owner obviously thinks he’s getting punked.

Undoing Net Neutrality allows the Free Market to charge more for the truckers, since the wear and tear they cause to the roads is much greater.

Now, apply that to the Internet. Pornography makes up 30% of the Internet traffic, and Netflix, and YouTube use a large share.

Net Neutrality forces you to pay the same amount to the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) as the bandwidth-hogging Porn, YouTube, and Netflix. And, what about Google and Amazon?!

Free Market lets the ISPs charge the Porn shippers and deliverers, as well as the other hogs, a higher rate than grandma gets charged when she tries to buy groceries from her local Schnucks.

If the ISP charges grandma too much, she goes somewhere else… …like Hughes Net, Charter, AT&T, Comcast, CenturyLink, Consolidated Communications, Digital West, Frontier, TDS Telecom, Verizon, Windstream… …etc. Oh, and Exede, Cox, Sprint, Dish, Cable ONE, etc.

A Triumph Of The Free Market

In Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on April 5, 2011, the do-gooders once again knew better… …and that there needed to be a government-enforced ban on smoking in Cape’s restaurants and bars.  The do-gooders (aka liberals who assail freedom at every turn) were able to get a smoking-ban initiative on the Cape ballot and the vote ensued.

Activists like Dale Humphries were ‘reflective’ after hearing that Cape Girardeau voters rejected the ban by 52% to 48%.  Sadly, 48% of Cape Girardeau voters agree with the tyranny of mob mentality.

The Mayor was torn, but came down on the side of freedom:

Mayor Harry Rediger said Tuesday he had mixed feelings about the election results. He is not a smoker and understands that smoking is a health hazard, he said. But, in the end, his concerns about government interference were paramount.

“To me, this proposal overstepped its bounds,” he said. “It should, in my opinion, have been a business owner’s decision how it wants to treat its business.”

The result? Businesses were free to decide for themselves.  And, a few weeks ago, a business in Cape did just that.

As a Libertarian / Conservative, I was thrilled to see the local Pasta House Company restaurant make their own decision to enforce a smoking ban.  As a smoker, one knows they need to go to another business, such as Bella Italia, who currently allows smokers to enjoy a completely legal product.

This is the Free Market at work.  I praise the 52% of Cape Girardeau residents and the city leaders that believe in that Freedom.

About Capitalism

Winston Churchill wrote, “The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”

Here are some real facts about Capitalism (those darned facts)

Just like you can’t repeal the law of supply and demand, you cant deny the vigor of the Free Market to create jobs and wealth. There is no coincidence that in 234+ short years, America’s Capitalism and Free Market systems allowed it to create the greatest wealth, economy, and opportunity on Earth.

Freedom, Free Enterprise, Free Market.

Obama: An Glimmer Of Sanity

After complaining about Obama’s…

  • Lack of experience
  • Marxism, Socialism, Communism beliefs
  • Destruction of the Private Sector Employment Opportunity
  • Vast Expansion of the Size of the Federal/State Government and National Debt
  • Massive Seizure of Power and Control
  • Out of Touch Narcissism
  • Shutdown of Energy Supply
  • Paybacks to Union
  • Vote Buying

…I finally have something for which to compliment.

Today, Obama signed a bill to reduce the tariffs on raw material imported into the US.  The company for which I work has been fighting long and hard against the bureaucracy of the ITC to reduce a tariff on raw magnesium that has destroyed the die cast industry.  The tariff has run manufacturing out the US to other countries that can import the cheap raw material, produce components, and import them into the US without the tariff.  US Manufacturers can’t compete with additional price of the raw material.

This effort by Obama and Congress is an extremely conservative free-market move.  I support the effort.

Sadly, I’m all to jaded and cynical about the effort.  What devil is in the details as with the recent bailout of the State Employees?  We’ll see, but the premise, if continued, is valid!

Maximus Freedomus

In the beginning there was God, and God created Man and Woman… …and gave them Free Will.  Or, if you don’t believe in God, in the beginning, there was nothing, which magically exploded and created man… …who has Free Will.  And for all the centuries of recorded history, men and women have struggled to be free.  The slaves of the Pharaohs, the Jews in the concentration camps, the slaves in America, the slaves of Islam.  Man struggles to be free and exercise his free will.

Along comes the U.S.A., the American Experiment, a country ruled by free people, with great freedoms to excel in a free market… …and in 200 short years, an astounding growth in richness and wealth is felt throughout the globe.  Led by the U.S.A, their free people, their freedom, and their free market, the world explodes with technology and health.

Two Maxims are that Government is a necessary evil and that Government takes away freedoms.  And, in the past 100 years, the Progressive cancer is slowly eroding our freedoms.  The Income Tax along with the exponential growth of the Federal Government has eroded our ability to enjoy the fruits of our labors.  The ever-growing level of regulation stifles our entrepreneurs and small businesses with rules and regulations.  And, the entitlement culture generating a massive Federal debt robs our future generations of liberty.

As the Federal government continues to grow, they tell the unwashed ‘small’ people that they are the experts and will tell us how to live, what light bulbs to buy, what washers to buy, how to get health care, how to run the banks, how to build a car, and how to generate power.  Progressives love to cite their experts and build regulations to force their agenda on the people.

Each regulation, each rule, each law, each hour you work to pay taxes, each program, each entitlement, each earmark takes away a little bit of your freedom, and the great American experiment teeters on the edge of tyranny.

The only solution is to reduce the Government intrusion and return the maximum of the three F’s to the people:  Freedom, Free Will, Free Market.
